MEASURE OF A MAN: MEMOIR WRITING WORKSHOP FOR STUDENTS NEW!
![]() Author J.J. Lee
Broadcaster, architect, tailor, fashion writer, and BC Book Prizes and Governor General Award nominated author J.J. Lee spent the afternoon working on memoir-writing with Grade 10 and 11 students in the library. J.J., who's fantastic memoir, The Measure of a Man, briefly shared his personal story and motivation behind the writing of his memoir, and helped students to improve the memoir pieces that they wrote in preparation for the workshop. With a warm, disarming, enthusiastic and extremely engaging approach, Lee offered tips for improving memoir-writing which most students took to heart and worked actively at their 100-word memoir-sampling. Many thanks to the BC Book Prizes for sponsoring J.J.'s time at L.V. Rogers, and thanks to the students and staff for their active and enthusiastic participation in this memorable experience!

Borrowers then have three weeks to use the materials and return them to the school library for shipment back to the public library. Many thanks to Wendy West (our district librarian) and June Stockdale (Nelson Public Library chief librarian) for their efforts in working out the finer details of this service. And thanks to SD8 for their support of this project that brings greater access to materials and digital content to both students and staff of L.V. Rogers. 'FREEDOM TO READ WEEK 2012' READER SURVEY RESULTS
Our Freedom to read can never be taken for granted. Even in Canada, a free country by world standards, books and magazines are banned at the border. Schools and libraries are regularly asked to remove books and magazines from their shelves. Free expression on the Internet is under attack. Few of these stories make headlines, but they affect the right of Canadians to decide for themselves what they choose to read. The staff and students participated in our annual survey: "What banned or challenged books have you read?" in celebration of Freedom to Read Week 2012. So, here's a list of the top most read 'challenged' books in Canada by LVR students and staff:
1. Harry Potter (series)
